The Nonaynevernomoores














We are delighted to welcome The Nonaynevernomoores, three dedicated musicians who are currently on a tour of Ireland.Max Bruel on accordion, is a native of Aveyron SW France and has had people dancing to the sound of his music since the age of 14. A native Ocitan speaker, he is well up on the local folklore.Leonard Zandstra on violin, is a classically trained violinist who hails from Amsterdam and is a prize winning student of the Rotterdam Conservatory of Music. He loves Irish music, especially reels.Nicky Purpora on guitar and banjo, was born in Connecticut but spent his early years in Wicklow. He is a compelling entertainer and a very talented singer/songwriter with a wide ranging repertoire. Check them out on YouTube. It’s Irish music like you’ve never heard before!

Kris Finnerty









Kris Finnerty is a singer/songwriter who lives in Bray, Co. Wicklow. His latest album, Christy is Dead, is 10 years of work comprised into one CD. The artwork in the booklet to the songs are a true showing of Kris's artistic nature and talent. His influences include Counting Crows, Band of Horses, Ben Harper and Bob Dylan. He can be regularly seen at The Porterhouse on Bray Seafront, Marriot Hotel and performing in The Dungeon

The Kilmagig Players









The Kilmagig Players are an up-and-coming drama group. They have performed various One-Act plays in different venues, including the Glenealy One-Act Festival in 2007 where they received 2 awards, and in 2008 where they received 7 awards."A Faceful of Flannel" written by Brian Langtry, is a lighthearted comedy set in the gym of a Leisure Centre. Two young women meet up at their weekly attendance at the posh gym where they mostly indulge in verbal rather than actual exercise. The arrival of a 'fit hunk' throws them a little off balance, but not for long.We welcome the Kilmagig Players back to the Space Inside with this very funny play.

Grace Wynne-Jones
Grace Wynne-Jones is the author of four highly intimate, humorous and poignant novels. She was born and brought up in Ireland, spending her early years in a big rambling rectory in the Irish countryside. Her feature articles have appeared in many magazines and national papers in Ireland and in England, and her radio play Ebb Tide was broadcast on RTE 1. Her short stories have been published in magazines in Ireland, England and Australia, and have also been broadcast on RTE and BBC Radio 4. She recently produced and presented a radio documentary about the land, legends and legacy of the Hill of Tara, which was broadcast on Newstalk. Ordinary Miracles, Wise Follies, Ready Or Not? - described as 'one of the best Irish novels this year' - and The Truth Club are available from Accent Press.
Grace will read from her work and talk about writing – the fun and frustration, the mysteries and magic of writing.













Martin Esseen
Originally from Wales, Martin Esseen has lived in Wicklow Town for the last 8 years. He has a varied amateur musical background, which includes singing at the Governor’s Ball in the Falkland islands, a guest appearance with the local band in Zanzibar and being a member of an all female choir in Wales! This will be his first public appearance in many years, and, providing his voice holds out and his 12 string guitar stays in tune, will mostly be a selection of Bob Dylan songs (and possibly a few others).










Wayne Dunne
Wayne Dunne has been playing music since he was a young boy, fronting several bands as singer/ guitarist. A very talented guitar player with a great singing voice, he has most recently fronted a band called Feedback, one of Wicklow's most popular bands. Tonight he performs solo, as he often does, singing songs from Pink Floyd and a host of other greats.

Martin Swords












‘Standing Naked’
Martin Swords is a member of Wicklow
Writers Group. In this presentation he is
‘coming out’ so to speak, talking about
writing poetry. He will read some of his
own work and that of other poets he admires.
Martin will also talk in a very personal way
about the things that made him want to write
poetry - family, friends, regrets, things not
said and things that should have been said.
Martin is published in Lifelines, New and Collected,
and Wicklow Writers Anthologies. His work can
be read on PoemHunter.com (under poet’s name),
wicklowwriters.blogspot.com and
martinswordspoetry.blogspot.com
You can also hear him read three of his poems on
‘Voices from the Shore’, a CD of poems and
stories by Wicklow Writers.
Martin has performed at many venues over the years,
including Tinahely Café, Wicklow Library and the
Space Inside.
We look forward to his performance of ‘Standing Naked’.

Phoenix and Friends











Featuring Thomas Merrigan

Thomas Merrigan is a musician from Wicklow. He has
been playing and writing music for many years and is
know for his performances around the Wicklow area.
His music is Irish and folk based, though his repertoire
also includes some contemporary music. Over the years
Thomas’ band, Phoenix, has had different
line-ups, and many of these experienced musicians have
promised to join him on the night. The evening will throw
up some great surprises with musicians from all corners
of Wicklow joining in the craic.
The cession could go on well into the night!

Eilis Stanley

Eilis Stanley is a poet and prose writer.She has lived

abroad for several years in England and California. A

founding member of a London based Women Writers

Group,Pink Writers, in the eighties, she also wrote a

weekly column for the San Francisco Irish Herald,

and was a monthly agony aunt.

On her return to Ireland in 2000, Eilis set up a Killiney

Writers group and wrote a monthly column for an

Irish emagazine, Scarlet.

In 2006,she and a co-writer set up Kulture Klub to

do readings and encourage other local writers to give

voice and performance to their writings. Over the

years, Eilis has performed at a number of Lesbian

and Gay Pride Events.

She now lives and works in Bray. Co. Wicklow.

Christer Kavanagh

Christer is a musician and singer/songwriter

who lives in Wicklow Town. Wicklow audiences

may know him as a member of Pineto Cats, where

he plays lead guitar and sings. The group will be

recording their first album in the New Year.

Christer will play original music on the night.

Avoca

Sean Olohan from Wicklow Town and Simon Keogh

from Dublin have been together for a little more than a

while!

They play at home and abroad as a two piece band, but

often extend to a three or four piece as The CANTONS.

Since appearing in Wicklow Sailing Club, they have

toured in Switzerland, Portugal, Germany and Austria,

as well as throughout Ireland.

Sean’s song ‘SAVING LIVES’ has been the bands

biggest success to date, topping the Irish National

Charts and Download Charts for 10 weeks. As well

as the top of the popularity charts for South East

Radio and KCLR. Simon and Sean will perform their

new single, ‘VINCENT AT CHRISTMAS’ in aid of

St. Vincent de Paul, which should launch the

festive season in style!

Novelist








Philip St.John is a prolific writer. His short stories
have been published in New Irish Writing and broadcast
on radio. He has just completed an M. Phil in Creative
Writing at Trinity College Dublin. Philip will read from
his latest novel, Crazy Baldheads, set in Jamaica in 1982.
He will also be happy to answer any questions you might
have on writing a novel.

Jo Callanan, born in South Africa and now living
in Greystones, qualified as a Graphic Designer with
photography as a major interest.
In June this year, she hosted an open Studio Exhibition
day at Stylebawn farm studios, with a number of artists
who share and enjoy the open space of the Wicklow
foothills. Her presentation is not to be missed.

Tim Scanlon from Wicklow Town, Cormac O’Daly from
Tralee and Billy Kilkenny from Malahide (l to r) make up
The Young Irish Tenors.
In 2006, they embarked on two hugely successful U.S and
European tours, alongside Irish Dancing Troop, Rhythm of
the Dance. Cormac studies with Irish tenor, Emmanuel
Lawler, at the Conservatory of Music Dublin, where Billy
began his singing career under Vocal coach Robert Alderson.
Tim attended the prestigious Music department of Estonia's
Tallinn University, studying vocal training and choral
conducting with Merica Aarme and Pille Saar.

For one night only, join us on Wednesday 1st October in Ernies, Market Square, and help to keep the arts scene alive in Wicklow.

Wicklow Young Filmmakers
2008 Winners

Robert Manson was the winner of Category 1 of this relatively new competition, for his film, The Silver Bow (Producer Paul Curren). This gentle, thought-provoking film is about a street performer who meets his son in town for an hour before he goes to work. Duration: 8 mins

Dylan Haskins won Category 2 with his documentary, Roll up your sleeves: The DIY Counterculture. The film is a colourful exploration of the ‘Do-It-Yourself’ counterculture, starting from Dylan’s alternative community and moving onto his European tour with US folk punk band. Independent music features throughout the film. Duration: 27 mins.
Both winners will be available for a brief discussion on their films, after the screenings.

Jimi Cullen Singer/songwriter

If you want to go on a journey from protest songs through love songs to those that squeeze every drop of emotion out of you, then Jimi Cullen is your man.
Jimi is a solo musician from Gorey. He has been writing and performing for over three years and has built a good reputation as one of the hardest working musicians, with over 500 gigs to his credit. His debut album, When the last leaf falls, was released in 2007 and has sold over 1,000 copies, receiving good reviews in Hotpress.
Jimi’s music can best be described as mix between Folk, Grunge, Blues and Rock, mixed with a healthy dose of originality.

Shirley McClure, Poet
Shirley McClure lives in Bray. She has been published in numerous journals including The SHOp, The Stinging Fly and Revival. She won the Western Writers’ Centre/Galway Now competition and was short-listed in Listowel Writers Week competition.
Shirley was awarded a writing bursary from Wicklow County Council and is no stranger to poetry readings, as she has performed at many local events including Tinahely Courthouse Café and The Winding Stair in Dublin.
Shirley’s poem, Astrogeograph, appears on page 7 of our journal.
We look forward to hearing more great poems from this experienced poet.
