Sinead O’Brien
Sinead is a singer, poet and percussionist. She also plays Kamal Ngoni (African harp) which influenced her style of self-taught guitar playing. She studied West African percussion in Ghana, Senegal and the Gambia and plays Sabar, Kpanlogo and Djimbe drums. She also enjoys Udu (Clay drum made by a local potter in Dublin), Congas, Bodhrán and Calabash water drum. . . . and her own hand-made Skwonkaphone. Sinead performs regularly with 'Chloe Goodchild' for her Irish concerts and sang and played percussion with 'Yemanja' (World Music Acapella) for 5 years, which included touring Ireland and TV appearances. For the past 10 years she has been facilitating Voice and Drum Circles. A very original and unique performer, check her out at www.livingrhythm.ie


Beating Time
Beating Time originated as a quartet in 1996, inspired by listening to a ladies barbershop quartet at the Cork Choral Festival. Making their first TV debut on RTE's Open House in 1997, membership quickly grew from the original 8 members to 23. Close harmony - accapella singing - is the essence of barbershop singing. The group’s repertoire covers musical styles ranging from swing and old ballads to gospel and today’s music charts. They are available for Corporate Functions, Weddings, Birthday Parties, or any special occasion. As Members of the Irish Association of Barbershop Singers, Beating Time compete each year at the National Convention and over the years, have taken the Gold Medal six times for Best Female National Chorus. Quarantine Hill
Quarantine Hill is a band with a new look and sound. Starting out as ‘Radiowaves’ in March 2003, the band produced their debut album "Keep My Silence". The Album received a good reaction and exceeded expectations locally. With new musicians joining the band, a fresh new name was required and so ‘Quarantine Hill’ was born - Quarantiine Hill is the name of a street in Wicklow Town.

Aphrodite Lion and the Clam-Jams!
Aphrodite Lion aka Anne Graham is a singer/songwriter who is currently working on songs for an album which she hopes to complete by the end of the year. The majority of the songs she will perform tonight “are like the lament of a jaded prom queen who has to sort out her teenage issues in order to move onto adulthood.” Her influences are varied and include the likes of The Beatles, David Bowie, Sleater-Kinney, Fever Ray, St. Vincent, Vivaldi and Lady Gaga. Anne will be joined on the night by Michael Tinsley with whom she has recently been writing songs. Neil Tierney & Martin Swords
Neill Tierney and Martin Swords present an eclectic mix of music and music related poems.
Neill Tierney is a skilled guitarist whose style and rhythm has to be seen and heard to be believed. He has performed before in Space Inside to great acclaim.
Martin Swords, a well known member of Wicklow Writers, accompanies Neill with a selection of his own music inspired poems.


Kwela Kwela
Kwela Kwela was originally formed in 1995, recording and touring in Ireland in that year. Members then were Punka Khoza, TJM Tutty and Stuart Smyth, and the band played a mix of African and Irish traditional music - before such mixes became popular with musicians here. Sadly Punka has since passed away and Stuart has moved on to other things in life.
Kwela Kwela members are now TJM Tutty, bass guitar, from the original line up, who is joined by Angolan native and master percussionist-drummer Mario Ngoma, a long-time resident of Wicklow. George Tshilumba from the Congo is on guitar and vocals, and Sean Sourke from Naas, on guitar, complete the line up.
The band plays its own music and anything is possible on the night.

Mealla Tarrant is in her third year of primary school teacher training in Froebel College, Blackrock. Opening a youtube account and posting music videos gave her enough confidence to begin playing and singing in small venues. In December, she was the opening act for popular Cork band, Fred, and since then has began searching for more venues in which to be heard. Mealla sings cover songs accompanied by acoustic guitar. Artists she covers include Oasis, Paolo Nutini and Dire Straits.

Rory O’Sullivan is a young poet whose influences are two of the greats: Yeats and Kavanagh. ‘I like talking, but some say I talk too much. I like dancing, but I'm told I'm a terrible dancer. I like smiling at people, who like smiling back. There is a stillness in music and words that captures me. Music and words come hand in hand, let them help you, let them heal you, for that is their purpose, and that's why I write.’

Winner of the Xmas Factor ’09 Writing competition held in Wicklow Library, Rory is also a keen songwriter and musician and plays in the band, ‘Rebel Diamond’. Rory’s poetry performance will be accompanied by music.

The day the colour fell

I lay and watched as it came down

Sweeping its beauty all across the town

Like paint splashing on a page

It dropped like glitter away from its cage.

The town was then left in black and white

No more emotion no wrong or right

We were left just floating our colour left behind

Nothing left to fight for no love left to find.

It shakes the hearts of all,

As on this day I tell

Of A day we shall remember,

The day the colour fell.

Rory O’Sullivan

Wicklow Piper

This piper is a member of St. Patrick’s Pipe Band. Founded in 1946, the band has been entertaining people not only in Wicklow but as far away as France and England. The task of passing on the tradition of piping is in the hands of the current Pipe Major, Joe Hanlon; in charge of drumming is the Drum Sargeant, Micheal O'Neill. New members are always welcome. Practice takes place in St. Patrick’s Boys School Prefab on Mondays, (drums only), Tuesday (Full Band) and Friday nights (Pipes only) from 7.30pm - 9.00pm.

Mia Parsons’ Trio














Mia Parsons is a singer whose voice has been described as being like 'chocolate'. A singer/songwriter, her deeply moving music spans jazz/funk and blues. A regular performer at festivals and other musical events, she has worked with many of the great Irish jazz musicians, including Richie, Hugh and Michael Buckley, Greg Felton, Myles, Paul and Anto Drennan, to mention a few.
Mia is joined by the experienced guitarist, Robbie Overson, who is a member of the legendary Irish band ‘Scullion’, with Sonny Condell and Philip King.
Mick O’Neill is the third member of this unique musical venture. A talented musician and songwriter, he brings his keyboard skills to this eclectic band.
The Mia Parsons’ Trio is a fusion of jazz, folk, and Motown.

The Two Old Codgers
A Comic Sketch

Frank O’Keeffe and Justin Aylmer are professional actors with a vast number of years experience between them. As the old codgers, their humorous and insightful commentary on life is always entertaining.
Frank is also a playwright and his play ‘The Young Lady Says Yes’ , recently won Category B at the Cork Writers’ Week. Congrats to Frank and all the cast.

Wayne Dunne

Wayne has been playing music since he was a boy, fronting several bands as singer/ guitarist. A talented guitar player with singing voice, he has most recently fronted Feedback, one of Wicklow's most popular bands. Tonight he performs solo, singing songs from Pink Floyd and a host of other greats.

Paul Sharkey

Paul Sharkey trained at the Brendan Smith Theatre Academy (1975 - 1977) then worked with a number of Dublin based drama groups, including the Dublin Shakespeare Society, playing the title role of Hamlet in 1980.

Moving to Wicklow, Paul continued to study speech and drama and, in 1981, he co-founded Harlequin Players with his wife Liz.

For ten years Harlequin Players provided corporate entertainment (Ghost Night & Murder Mystery) for Tinakilly House Hotel and also Dinner Theatre, including shows based on the works of Oscar Wilde, Charles Dickens, W.B. Yeats and James Joyce. During the same period Paul compiled and performed shows for the Synge Summer School.

This festive month, Paul will entertain us with ‘Bob Sawyer gives a bachelor party’ from Pickwick Papers. An occasion not to be missed!

Jazz duo: Frank Gallagher and Gerry Clarke

Frank Gallagher has been playing blues and jazz in Ireland and Europe since the 70s. He has performed regularly with the likes of Don Baker, Red Peters and Johnny Norris, to mention just a few. In the 80s, he formed the Jitterbug Jug Band with Gerry Clarke. Since

then he has mainly performed solo or in small groups with Gerry Clarke. He has also lectured and written about blues and jazz and worked as a music critic for the Grapevine Arts Magazine.

Gerry Clarke has been performing blues and early jazz since the 70s in Ireland and America, where he worked with some of the important figures of the folk blues revival. He is also a music broadcaster, historian and record producer with an international reputation. His radio documentary, The Golden Age of Irish Recording, won the BCI award for best music documentary in Ireland. The third volume of his Old Time Records label, Piping Rarities, will be launched in the Pipers’ Club on 5 December 2009.

A.K.
A.K. is a singer/songwriter from Waterford. His foray into writing songs started when he was 15 finding himself unable to sing in the key of the popular singers he liked at the time. Since then he has been building up a range of songs, developing his style. Vocally he has been compared to Jack L, Nick Cave and James Hetfield. With a wide range in musical tastes.

Seamus Byrne - The Manach
Seamus Byrne is a Celtic singer, flautist and international performer. He performs music for meditation and relaxation and his haunting Celtic Music reaches in to move your spirit. Seamus has released a number of CDs, his latest with John Two-Hawks, the master American Indian musician.
Seamus plays Irish flute, whistles, Apache Spirit flute and bodhran, and loves to sing in the melodic Irish style. We welcome him back to our Live Night.

Timothy Kavanagh

Timothy Kavanagh

Timothy Kavanagh is a twenty five year old artist and musician from Wicklow Town. ‘I started playing the drums when I was 10 years old, and picked up percussion instruments, like the bongos and bodhran, during my teenage years,’ he says. He taught himself to play the guitar and has been writing songs ever since.
On the night, Timothy will play some of his own numbers and songs he enjoys singing.

Siobhan Mac Mahon is an Irish Poet, Performer and Playwright resident in Leeds. The live experience of the Spoken Word is at the heart and centre of her work and she has many years of experience delighting audiences with her vital and often comic performances. Siobhan invokes the magic, myths and mayhem of the ancient Irish Goddesses and their modern day counterparts in a funny, passionate and provocative piece of performance - part poetry, part story telling.

Siobhan’s work explores our mystical, cultural and spiritual connection to the earth, the banishment of the Divine feminine and the resultant repression of a joyful sensuality. She has a diploma in Drama from the Drama Studio London, is a member of Equity and a member of National association of Writers in education (NAWE), B.Arch. from Trinity College Dublin. For the second year running, we are pleased to bring you the winning short films in thisbursary programme.

Al O’Donnell’s career in folk music has had many highlights. He accompanied Luke Kelly on RTE TV on Raglan Road and his two solo album’s spawned two top-ten hits. He appeared on ‘The Late Late Show’ and at various festival, sharing the stage with Emmylou Harris and Rory Gallagher. He toured with Tommy Maken, The Chieftons, The Dubliners and many others.

Al’s latest CD, ‘Ramble Away,’ was released in late ’08. We are delighted to welcome this professional musician back to the Space Inside.
